The Center for Coaching in Healthcare is dedicated to the development of standards and research to support professional coaches in healthcare as well as best practices for the application of basic coaching skills by healthcare providers.
Given that 75% of healthcare costs are generated by preventable chronic diseases, it has never been more important for people to take responsibility for their health and reap the full benefits of optimal health and well-being, the foundation for thriving in our personal and professional lives.
Professional coaches in healthcare form partnerships with clients to optimize health and well-being by developing and sustaining healthful lifestyles. Coaches help clients enhance self-motivation and self-regulation, leverage strengths, navigate the journey of change, and build other psychological resources needed to change for good, including mindfulness, positivity, hope, optimism, self-efficacy, and resilience.
Center for Coaching in Healthcare Activities
The Center is co-facilitating two projects with the University of Minnesota's Center for Spirituality and Healing:
-
National team of industry and academic experts which is developing international standards and certification for health and wellness coaches. This team is holding an invitational summit in September 2010 following the Harvard Medical School Coaching in Medicine & Healthcare conference, in order to build a consensus on standards and the strategy for implementation of health and wellness coaching as a new profession in healthcare. The summit is sponsored by The Institute for Integrative Health.
-
National team of physicians and researchers to implement a coaching research strategy in a variety of clinical applications including metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and mental health conditions.
The teams are led by Margaret Moore, Co-Director of the Institute of Coaching, and Karen Lawson, MD, Director of Health Coaching at the University of Minnesota. Team members include coach educators and trainers, practicing coaches, physicians, and credentialing experts at Harvard Medical School, UMN, Duke, Vanderbilt, Wellcoaches, American College of Sports Medicine, American Holistic Nurses Association, HealthCorps, California Institute of Integral Studies, Real Balance Global Wellness Services, National Institute of Whole Health, Health Integrated, Copeman Healthcare, and Mayo Clinic.
Other Center activities include:
- Disseminating the lessons learned from coaching research in healthcare to date.
- Disseminating best practices in coaching research in healthcare.
- Defining mechanisms of action of coaching that drive positive outcomes and underpinning science-based coaching competencies.
- Building a community of coaching researchers in healthcare.
- Conducting coaching research supported by grants.
