Every leader or manager has the dual problem of fostering high-quality motivation and satisfaction in their followers, and keeping themselves vital and inspired. In this talk Dr. Ryan will present research based in self-determination theory (SDT) concerning how leaders can facilitate or undermine autonomous motivation and its positive consequences within their organizations. He will also discuss what helps sustain leaders’ motivation and commitment over time and how leadership coaches can support those outcomes. In doing so he will look at the central importance of autonomy supportive coaching and counseling skills, and some of the practical obstacles coaches face in fostering clients’ behavior change and wellness.
Richard M. Ryan, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and Professor at the Institute for Positive Psychology and Education at the Australian Catholic University in Sydney. He is an award-winning speaker and researcher, with over 450 published articles and books. Ryan is a co-founder of Self-Determination Theory, an internationally researched theory of personality development and motivation that has been applied to areas as management, education, parenting, health care, sport, video games, psychotherapy.
