We all know how to listen, right? Make eye contact, wait your turn to speak, offer summaries to clarify what you have heard, and ask relevant questions. Although these are helpful, listening is far more than these traditional approaches. In this presentation, Psychologist and Researcher, Dr. Robert Biswas-Diener and IOC Founder, Carol Kauffman, will discuss a fresh take on listening. It begins with the idea that listeners have intentions, some of which are pro-social, some anti-social, and some self-focused. These intentions, in turn, guide a listener's attention and noticing. This is why two people might hear, notice, or value two completely different details from the exact same conversation. This conversation will cover common obstacles to listening and offer greater nuance on traditional listening skills.
