All coaches believe that clients perform better when they are stronger. Over the years, researchers have developed a number of assessments that coaches use to help identify and develop strengths in their clients. This course builds on and extends these practices. Dr. Robert Biswas-Diener, a pioneer in positive psychology coaching and Coaches50 awardee, presents the latest research, frameworks, and strengths-coaching practices. If you are new to strengths-coaching this will get you all caught up. If you are an experienced strengths-coach, this course will provide fresh insights.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • List three benefits of a strengths-focus
  • Explain common obstacles to clients focusing on and accepting their strengths
  • Name three types of strengths over and under use
  • Use meta-interventions to make strengths coaching more effective

A Strengths Mindset

In this introductory session, we will begin by answering the question “Why a strengths focus?” To do so, we will evaluate research on the topic including new publications. Along the way, we will examine common sayings such as “My greatest strength is also my greatest weakness” and “There is more room for growth in weaknesses than there is in strengths.

Relating to Strengths

Many coaches are in a hurry to have their clients use their strengths. Here, we discuss the wisdom in fully exploring the client’s relationship with strengths before ever trying to use them. Specific topics in the session include 1. The 5 most common reasons clients do not accept their strengths, 2. Recent research on mindset and strengths, and 3. How to create cultural norms within the coaching relationship that support a strengths focus. You will also learn specific in-session activities that help clients explore their relationship with their strengths.

Strengths Development

We conclude with attention to strengths development. Too often, coaches foreclose on the idea that strengths should be used to solve a client problem. In this session, we will re-think that approach by looking at ways that clients can develop their strengths so that they can navigate all of their problems! We will look at 1. Three distinct types of strengths underuse and three types of overuse, 2. Ways in which clients compromise their strengths (or fail to do so), and 3. Ways in which strengths join together to form compound strengths.
