Debra Doroni is a certified and International Coach Federation accredited executive and leadership coach whose mission is to engage leaders at all levels to fulfill their goals in their professional and personal lives. She brings to her coaching more than 25 years of experience as an executive, having held strategic and operational leadership roles in large and small physician practice, academic hospital and for-profit healthcare settings.
As an executive, Debra was recognized for her communication skills, aptitude in coalescing diverse constituents, and ability to effect positive results in complex situations. She was also known for her collegial leadership style and ability to attract and develop exceptional talent and build highly-functioning teams.
As a coach, Debra supports leaders and teams to develop unused resources and opportunities, and manage challenging situations more effectively, to create change that leads to life-enhancing results, outcomes, accomplishments and impact. Examples of focus areas include managing conflict, strengthening relationships with supervisors, colleagues, and supervisees, developing organizational, strategic and implementation skills, creating, exploring, and/or preparing for new professional opportunities/advancement, enhancing executive presence, and overcoming beliefs and situations that hinder professional effectiveness. Using the Team Emotional Intelligence Survey®, she helps teams understand and craft strategies to improve interpersonal dynamics leading to constructive interactions, collaborative work processes, and enhanced team effectiveness. She is the Executive Coach for the Boston College Woods College of Advancing Studies Master of Healthcare Administration Program.
Having been compelled in the aftermath of cancer treatment to transform her own professional and personal life, Debra has a particular interest in working with leaders whose professional identity has been impacted by injury or disease.
Most recently, Debra served as Regional Vice President - New England for Surgical Care Affiliates (SCA) where she was responsible for directing strategy and business planning, administration, operations, and finances for SCA’s ambulatory surgery centers in Connecticut and Rhode Island, and for expanding the company’s market share throughout New England by creating relationships with physicians, health systems, and health plans, developing new facilities and facilitating mergers and acquisitions.
For 16 years prior to joining SCA, Debra was the Executive Director for the Department of Surgery, the Transplant Center, and the Digestive Healthcare Center at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGH/MGPO). In this role, she directed all administrative, operational, educational, research, financial and strategic and business planning aspects of the Department of Surgery and its eleven divisions, including physician group practices, educational programs, research laboratories, and clinical programs. She was instrumental in establishing the Department’s 110+ physician practice, creating strategic partnerships with community hospitals, launching new education and research programs, and establishing multidisciplinary centers of excellence, resulting in an increase in the Department’s clinical and research revenues by nearly 140% over five years. She also led the institution's strategic planning initiatives for the Transplant Center and Digestive Healthcare Center and was an instructor in the MGH/MGPO Business Planning and Development course for physician leadership.
Debra began her career as the Laboratory Manager for the M. Judah Folkman, M.D. Surgical Research Laboratories at the Children’s Hospital in Boston. Subsequently, she was an Associate for Health Management Associates, Inc., where she provided practice management services and project-based consulting to physician groups. Debra then joined Massachusetts General Hospital where she served as Administrative Director for Pediatric Surgical Services and the Knight Surgical Research Laboratory for two years during, which she was also Project Manager for the Operating Room Services process improvement program, before being promoted to lead the Department of Surgery.
Debra completed her coach certification at the Gestalt International Study Center in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts and a Master of Business Administration Degree in Finance from Boston College. She is a member of the International Coach Federation, Institute of Coaching, Association for Coaching, Organizational Development Network, and Association for Talent Development.
Debra is a volunteer consultant for Empowering Success Corps (ESC) New England, a not-for-profit consulting firm dedicated to enhancing the impact of nonprofit organizations by providing high quality, affordable consulting services, capacity building, programs, leadership support and coaching. ESC leverages the talents of experienced professionals who volunteer their time in service to the nonprofit community. For five years, Debra served on the Board of DOVE, Inc. of Massachusetts, and for six years, she served the United Way of Massachusetts Bay as a member of the Citizen’s Review Allocations Committee and as a grant reviewer for Today’s Girls Tomorrow’s Leaders. In 2016, Debra and her husband participated in a medical mission at the Holy Family Surgery Center (HFSC) located on Rancho Santa Fe in Honduras and are sponsoring a child from Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPS), the orphanage located on the ranch.
A native of the South Shore of Massachusetts, Debra now resides in Wakefield, Rhode Island with her husband, James. They spend their leisure time hiking and enjoying other outdoor activities in New Hampshire’s White Mountains and the US National Parks.
