Tomorrowmind: Coaching for the Whitewater World of Work
Details

In her book Tomorrowmind, co-authored with Martin Seligman, Kellerman outlined the five skills essential for personal and professional success in a workplace of uncertainty, volatility, and isolation. These five PRISM powers - prospection, resilience, innovation, social connection, and mattering - can all be developed, and are best built through coaching. In this session, Dr Kellerman will describe the process of arriving at the PRISM five; share novel scientific findings about how to build each; and highlight coaching techniques best suited to support coachees working on these skills. She will also describe the importance of building these skills for coaches in particular.

Building Trauma Informed Organizations and People: Why Healing Must be the Way Forward
Details

Dr. AMC’s interactive lecture will explore the neuroscience of connection, mattering and belonging; discuss the role of historical trauma; the utility of trauma-informed systems change as a response to the great re-evaluation and what individuals and organizations can do to move toward healing and to become trauma informed.

The 21st century workforce is expecting the 21st century workplace (and systems) to pivot to move toward becoming more relational and less transactional. This pivot will involve building trauma informed systems by understanding key relationships between fear, stress, trauma, healing, and prevention of re-traumatization. You will emerge from this talk with new language and tools to help you create the conditions for healing and mattering.

Positive Psychology and Coaching Past, Present, & Future

Over the last thirty years, Positive Psychology has gone from just an idea to a scientifically grounded discipline. It delineates a scope of practice with its underlying theory, it has validated tests and interventions that reliably build well-being. Artificial intelligence (AI) is about to revolutionize positive psychology coaching. Large Language Models can assist the coach in creating the narrative identity of the client, formulating an intervention plan, and actually giving impactful advice.

Challenge Your Growth: Developmental Coaching to Foster Healthcare Professionals
Details

Healthcare professionals are very engaged despite the extreme workload and responsibility they face day in and day out. As staff shortage, exhaustion and burn-out is linked with reduced quality of care, it is of utmost importance to optimize support programmes to foster engagement, optimal professional development and lifelong learning among healthcare professionals. How to initiate evidence-based support interventions? Developmental coaching may be part of the solution.

In this session, Dr. Anne P.J. de Pagter will bring science and practice together to discuss coaching research focused on healthcare professionals. She will share insights from an ongoing nationwide initiative to provide coaching to medical students, residents, physicians, and nurses across multiple hospitals in the Netherlands.

A New Role for Coaching: "Midwife for Midlife Wisdom"
Details

What if midlife isn't a crisis, but a chrysalis, a time for radical transformation? That's one of the questions NY Times bestseller author and MEA founder and CEO Chip Conley asks in his new book, “Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better With Age." Chip's midlife wisdom school, MEA, and book are meant to be a PSA to the unexpected pleasures and joys of midlife. On average, we’re becoming wiser, less reactive, more generous, and happier as we get older. Our life has gained a rich patina. Coaches have the capacity to midwife their midlife clients through this deeply transformative era of their life, but there haven't been enough schools and tools for this life stage. Like a midwife, a coach doesn’t have to be called in for the dramatic moments, just at the exciting time of birth, but can support the whole person throughout the entire process. In this expansive and expanding role for coaches, they too need tools, self-awareness and the presence to be truly available with clients during what can be a challenging transition. In this engaging review of the research into midlife, an emergent time of possibility and creativity, Chip will offer guidance for coaches to source their own inner wisdom--to move beyond competency to mastery--in their commitment to manifest the fullest potential of their clients--and themselves.

Ragtime: The Mind and Music of Scott Joplin
Details

The son of a slave, Scott Joplin grew up playing the piano in minstrel shows, saloons, and houses of prostitution. It was there that he found, nurtured, and became the grandmaster of a form - ragtime - that has made him one of music’s immortals. Concert pianist and psychiatrist Dr. Richard Kogan traces the inspiring arc of Joplin’s story - his impoverished childhood, his struggles with the indignities of racism and exploitation throughout his adult life, and his ultimate triumph as the “King of Ragtime”. The discussion will be illuminated by piano performances of Joplin masterpieces including “The Entertainer” and “The Maple Leaf Rag”.

The Wisdom of Constructive Communication for Navigating Relationships in Tough Times
Details

How we respond to each other in good times and bad is at the heart of human relationships. Our capacity to share both positive and negative emotions and experiences is a marker of the quality of our connections with each other, but can be challenged by the stressors we encounter as we move through a fractious and pain-filled world. Expressing both positive and negative emotions must be done constructively so that relationship partners can learn and grow from their mutual sharing. In this talk, I will explore what “constructive” communication is, what it is not, what it takes to practice it, and the role of coaching for strengthening this important skill.

What Actually Makes Us Happy? Lessons from an 85-Year Study of Life
Details

For most of the 20th century we measured our wellbeing solely on the basis of gross domestic product. In the last 20 years, people have taken a serious look at what makes us happy. The UN publishes a yearly report that identifies the conditions that people say they need to live a happy life, and they are fairly uniform across all cultures and income levels. These factors include social support, health, freedom to make life choices, and trust. Yet when we survey millennials in the US about their most important life goals, they tell us that they want to become rich and famous and achieve a great deal at work. The disconnect is due at least in part to what we are told we should want and should make us happy, through constant bombardment from media about what life should look like. The Harvard Study of Adult Development is one of the only studies in history to track the same people from adolescence into their 90s, to find out what really makes us thrive. We find that the breadth and depth of our relationships with others are keys to wellbeing as we age – not just happiness, but physical health. Loneliness is toxic, and many people are lonely. We find that material things make us less happy than experiences. Although relationships are key to our thriving, we have stopped investing in others over the last 70 years. Beginning with the arrival of television in every home, and increasing with the advent of our electronic screens, we have greatly diminished the frequency with which we invite others to our homes, have family dinners, and invest in community activities and religious institutions. We must actively tend to our connections with others in order to foster our own wellbeing and the wellbeing of those we care about.

This session will provide an overview of how climate change is impacting our health, especially for the most vulnerable, and strategies that each one of us can implement to help minimize the impact.

Brain Energy: Lifestyle Interventions for Mental Health
Details

Mental disorders are a growing crisis and are now the leading cause of disease burden and disability worldwide. Although current treatments can work, they fail to work for far too many people. The brain energy theory integrates decades of clinical, epidemiological, basic science, neuroimaging, genetic, and metabolic research into one coherent theory: mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain. This theory integrates biological, psychological, and social theories of mental illness and offers new treatments that come with the hope of long-term healing as opposed to just symptom reduction. This presentation will offer a high-level overview of the brain energy theory and some of the lifestyle treatments that it offers, including changes in diet, exercise, hormones, substance use, sleep, and some of the nuances and concerns with current treatments.

The Power of Wisdom in the Age of AI
Details

The world is undergoing massive technological changes, and AI will be an integral part of this next chapter of life. While computer intelligence is increasing at lightning speed, there are elements it will never replace, including the power of human connection and presence. Yes, we need answers to certain questions AI will provide, but there are other questions that can only be accessed when we are able to receive support through the presence of another person, someone who is able to foster genuine human connection and empathy. While some jobs will be replaced, other opportunities will present themselves, and our job is to navigate this time and continue to offer our own gifts and talents. This talk will explore this topic, looking at how we can both harness the emerging power of AI, while also remembering what is most essential to our life and work that no machine can replace.
